For last couple of days was on a business tour moving across geographic boundaries. It was homely Singapore, splendid Genting and gorgeous Manila and finally back to Singapore to conclude, before we fly to home city Kolkata next week. Every mission needs a team and has few challenges to overcome. So was ours!
Beyond business, food was a major challenge in a few places and that too being occasional veggie created more of trouble in the carnivorous lands. What over-killed the pain were the lavish stay and the mystic casinos. Red carpet rooms with poker boards, smoke of cigars, skimpy dressed women and hard looks of men on poker table pushes one to be in a world beyond the normal.
Off course, team which was in its formative stage was opening to form and norm. Different traits and level of acceptance kept the journey alive with various experiences. Hard discussions, debates, cross talks also had to end on a lighter node with every sunset. Professional world has some unified languages and years of experience have taught how to be resilient.
On the concluding note of the other day I threw an open one on the air – “So what’s’ up today evening?”
-“PYT”, was a prompt reply! It came from one of the most smart business partner in the tour.
-“What’s that?” – I was curious, wondering over the abbreviation in the entertainment world.
-“What’s that?” – I was curious, wondering over the abbreviation in the entertainment world.
-“Pretty Young Things …Ahh ... You know pretty young things …” the voice chuckled with enough hint on me to guess what it could mean.
Sensing my suppressed discomfort, careful professional voice broke the ice saying – “Well it a popular program in this entertainment world! Men in your team may enjoy it better than you.” He left enough for me to be confused in imagination. In college style he continued jovially “Never mind we would meet for dinner at …”
While men in the team echoed the matter all in joke we ended just chatting over dinner table. Once more I hit a crisis over the platter, but thoroughly enjoyed a friendly exchange of cultures, food and social life across respective home countries … Our key business partner, who had kept the team wondering on the PYT event, is Chinese by birth, settled in Kulalampur, international in business and also a father of two. With business needs anticipated to get over prior to schedule, he had planned to pack up early the next day and head for his family on a preponed flight. In between our dialogues heard him mentioning about his kids twice in some context or the other. The father in him was so evident and natural.
Rest of us had to wait for the next morning to board the flight. I realized that pretty young things actually were happening around me. Post immigration check point, at Changi Airport I settled to organize my travel documents in order. It took me a while to set self free and realize the rest members in the team were all roaming in India, over satellite. Amazing styles of communications with two, four and six …years old kids at home!
The language of a father is universal – unified by feeling of unadulterated passion of a man!
